Distressing a new wood is a good way to create texture and character in your wood. If done correctly, distressed wood or furniture can be a good addition to your home.
Distressing wood has been a trend for the past couple of seasons. The old and rustic vibe has been the aim of many home decorators as it is one of the easiest home decors to do. But how can we distress the wood or make our wooden furniture old and rustic?
How to distress wood and make it old and rusty?
1. Use cheap wood
If you are creating distressed wood, it is better to get cheap wood for your project. Essentially, you would destroy a good surface of the wood and make superficial damage so it would look distressed. Expensive woods would only make distressing harder and it would not achieve the effect that you would get in cheaper woods.
2. Use sanding technique
This is the simplest and most straightforward technique for distressing wood. And this can be done whether your wood is painted or not. To achieve a good effect, you can randomly sand the sides of the wood. Sanding it on random places would create an effect of old wood.
3. Beating the wood
Since we want to achieve a wood that has been through time, it might be good to beat that wood up. This will create an effect that the wood had survived everything that it went through. You can beat the wood up using any hand tools that you have. You can use a hammer and screw, or steel chain. Or you can use them both for variation of effect.

4. Candle Technique
This technique is said to be versatile with good results most of the time. This technique also involves multiple layers of paint. Start with choosing a base color and paint the wood at random spots. Then, take a candle, and rub it in random spots too. You can put a candle on top of the painted spots so you can do this step after the base color has dried. After rubbing the candle, you can paint the next color. Wait for it to dry, and wipe the candle so the paint will come off.
5. Wire brush
Aside from sandpaper, you can also use the wire brush to distress the wood. This will give a deep weathered effect or a wood that has been exposed to a lot of things. This technique works well with cheap wood too. The texture of your wood would depend on the pressure applied to the wire brush.
Distressing wood is a good project to do if you are planning to redecorate a space in your home. A sudden character of wood because of the distressing effect can give a whole lot of different vibes to your space. Rustic and classic are styles that would always be there so the longevity of relevance of the design is expected. Try this project and create something extraordinary out of your everyday things.
